June/2013 Someone from San Francisco thinks:

  • Overall rating: 1.7
  • Would you recommend it? No
  • Positive: Location and view (after I had to pay more)
  • Negative: I booked a sea view room with balcony and was given a first floor room, overlooking the pool. When I asked for a different room, I was told that the hotel was fully booked and if I looked beyond the bodies in chaise lounges at the pool (right outside my balcony), I had a sea view. I had to pay more to get the room I had booked, on a higher floor. It's good I did because there was a wedding that evening, with amplified music on the pool patio right outside the deck of my originally intended room! Beware - you will not get the room you expect.

May/2013 Someone from Utah, USA thinks:

  • Overall rating: 9.4
  • Would you recommend it? Yes
  • Positive: My husband and I stayed at Hotel Europa for two nights mid-May 2013. We quite enjoyed this hotel and would definitely stay here again. The location absolutely cannot be beat. The hotel looks right out into Puerta Del Sol square in the heart of Madrid. The streets on either side of the hotel are pedestrian-only. As a result, this square becomes a large gathering place for people during big holidays (New Year’s) and events (a big soccer-game win). If you want to be immersed right in the heart of the city, this is THE hotel for it. The lobby of the hotel is spacious and lovely. The hoteliers were friendly and helpful. They request you leave your key at the desk when you go out, as most European hotels do. Their elevator is large enough for two people and all of your luggage, which is plenty adequate (and much larger than many elevators in Europe). The rooms are fairly simple. The walls are noticeably bare of artwork but each room includes a (free) safe, a desk, a bench, nightstands, TV, beds, etc. The linens were simple but everything was VERY clean. There were extra blankets and hangers in the closet, which had convenient floor to ceiling mirrors on the doors. Our double room consisted of two single beds pushed together (as it did at every other hotel we stayed at on our trip – this is the norm). The mattresses were quite firm, again – as they were in every hotel we stayed at in Spain), but the pillows and linens were more than adequate. The bathrooms were perhaps the most pleasant surprise of all. The bathrooms were floor to ceiling marble, with a nice glass-door shower/tub, toilet, bidet and lots of space to move around in. Our window in the bathroom looked into an inner courtyard, while our window/balcony in the bedroom looked out over the Puerta Del Sol. As far as the size of the rooms, they are MUCH larger than any hotels you will find in large cities in Europe (Paris, etc). There was plenty of room to wheel luggage around comfortably and move about without bumping into your companions. The balcony and view were definitely the highlight. We stayed on the top floor in an East-facing room, which still has a lovely view of the square and the walking street below. The curtains in the room are heavy and block the light well. The doors to the balcony open wide and there is enough room out there to set a chair and enjoy some people watching if you choose. The one downside of this location is that the square below doesn’t go to sleep until between 2 and 4 AM on weekends. But if you’re traveling here you’ll likely have earplugs with you like we did, and the noise wasn’t a problem for us. The hotel also had free, reliable wi-fi that was fast enough for us to video-chat with family at home. This was the only hotel (out of 5 on this trip) that had fast enough internet for video chatting. The hotel also offers a breakfast which we did not pay for or eat. Overall, this hotel was a fantastic value and an amazing location, and for the price I’d stay here over and over and over again!

  • Quietness: 2.5 The hotel is located in a prominent square in Madrid and as such, has outside noise until late most nights. But this location is also one of the BEST things about this hotel! Bring a pair of earplugs and the problem is solved.
  • Room: 10 The view cannot be beat!
